Why Potholes Come Back
Pothole and patch repair is the fix for spots where the asphalt and the base below it have failed. In the Naugatuck Valley, most potholes appear in March and April. Water got into a crack in the fall, froze and thawed dozens of times over the winter, softened the base, and the weight of cars broke the surface. Filling that hole with cold patch helps for a few weeks. A permanent repair goes down to firm ground.
Repair methods
HomeGuide lists the common methods:
- Cold patch, $2 to $4 per sq ft: temporary, good for winter emergencies
- Hot patch, $2 to $5 per sq ft: hot mix packed into a cleaned hole
- Infrared, $2 to $6 per sq ft: the old asphalt is heated and reworked with new mix for a seamless repair
- Saw-cut, full-depth, $4 to $12 per sq ft: the area is cut square, the base repaired and new asphalt placed and compacted
For a failure that reaches the base, saw-cut, full-depth patching is the repair that lasts.
Look for the cause
A patch fails the same way the original did if the cause is left in place. On sloped driveways the cause is often runoff crossing the surface or running along an unsupported edge. Other causes are downspouts dumping water onto the pavement, a low spot that ponds, or a settled utility trench. We point out the cause and include a fix, such as a berm, a swale or regrading, when it makes sense.
Edges and washouts
On hillside driveways, the downhill edge often washes out first. Water runs along it, undermines the base and the asphalt breaks off. We rebuild those edges with base under them and add an asphalt berm or wedge curb to carry water past.
Utility trenches
After a water, sewer or gas repair, the trench across a driveway or lot often settles. We remove the temporary patch, compact the backfill and base, and place full-depth asphalt that ties into the existing surface.
Minimums and timing
Repairs carry a minimum because a crew and hot asphalt are needed regardless of size; HomeGuide lists call-out fees of $100 to $250. Grouping several repairs, or combining patching with sealcoating, spreads that cost. Hot-mix plants generally run in the warmer months, so permanent repairs are a spring-to-fall job, with cold patch available as a stopgap in winter.
When patching is no longer enough
If patches cover a large share of the driveway, or new failures keep appearing around old patches, the base is probably failing broadly. At that point an overlay or full replacement costs less over time than repeated repairs. We tell you honestly when you have reached that point.

Pothole & Patch Repair Questions
How much does it cost to fix a driveway pothole?
HomeGuide lists $100 to $400 for a typical pothole repair, and $4 to $12 per square foot for larger saw-cut patches, plus a minimum service charge.
Can you repair potholes in winter?
We can cold-patch to keep the driveway usable, then make a permanent hot-mix repair when the weather allows.
Why does the edge of my sloped driveway keep breaking off?
Water is running along it and washing out the base. Rebuilding the edge and adding a berm or wedge curb to channel the water usually solves it.
Will a patch match my driveway?
New asphalt starts darker. A sealcoat after it cures evens out the color.
